I am an everyday Australian who relies on the ABC – our ABC – for trustworthy news, objective analysis of today’s issues, content that inspires and entertains us and Australian-made programming that engages with people of all ages.
I care deeply about the ABC because it reflects who we are as a nation. And we know that none of this is possible without the talented, dedicated people who bring this work to life.
That’s why we are calling on you to ensure ABC staff have secure, fair, properly supported jobs – so they can continue doing the work we value and make a decent living while they do it.
We’ve seen too many skilled and experienced reporters leave our screens in regional communities because the pay and career pathways simply don’t allow them to stay. We’ve seen diverse staff feel unsupported and undervalued, leading them to walk away from the organisation and team they love. And we’ve heard story after story of people stuck on the same pay band for years – even decades – with no opportunity to progress despite their valuable experience and contribution.
This isn’t good for the ABC and it certainly isn’t good for audiences.
To continue serving the public, the ABC must invest in secure, sustainable careers for the people who make public broadcasting possible. We want an ABC that provides staff with:
-
Fair pay that keeps up with the cost of living
-
Pay-band progression that recognises improvements in skills and experience over time
-
Secure jobs, particularly for contract workers, so they can build a future for them and their family, and at the ABC
-
Guardrails around the use of AI that protect the integrity of public interest journalism, in line with the journalist code of ethics
We are asking you, as the ABC Board, to agree to an offer that reflects these values – one that ensures ABC staff have the job security and respect they deserve, so they can keep producing the quality news and programming all Australians rely on.
